COLLECTIVE Book Club | January 2026 Reflection

Updated: Mar 29

Nightbloom by Peace Adzo Medie

Our January gathering of the COLLECTIVE Book Club centered on Nightbloom, a novel that opened the door to conversations around friendship, identity, and the long-term impact of our lived experiences.

Set in Ghana and the United States, the story follows Selasi and Akorfa, two women whose friendship begins in childhood and evolves over time. What made this discussion especially meaningful was not just the storyline itself, but how many of the themes felt familiar, particularly the ways we carry our past into our present, often without fully realizing it.

What We Explored Together

Rather than approaching the book from a purely literary perspective, our conversation focused on how the story connects to real life: emotionally, socially, and personally.

1. The Weight of Unspoken Experiences

One of the strongest threads in our discussion was how silence shapes relationships. The characters navigate difficult experiences that are not always openly addressed, and this led us to reflect on how often women carry things quietly, whether out of protection, fear, or simply not having the space to process.

2. Friendship Over Time

We talked about how friendships evolve, especially across distance, life transitions, and personal growth. The novel highlights that closeness is not always constant, and that relationships can shift in ways that feel both natural and painful.

3. Identity Across Spaces

Because the story moves between Ghana and the U.S., it also raised questions about belonging, adaptation, and the complexity of navigating different cultural environments. Many shared how identity can feel fluid depending on where we are and who we are with.

4. Emotional Wellness and Reflection

In line with the Aafiyah Women’s Collective approach, we grounded the discussion in wellness. Not in a clinical way, but in a reflective one. How do we process what we’ve experienced? How do we reconnect with ourselves when we’ve been disconnected for a long time?

A Different Kind of Book Club

The COLLECTIVE Book Club is not designed to be academic or overly analytical. Instead, it is a space for women to engage with stories in a way that feels relevant and personal.

Our intention is to keep the space:

  • Reflective, not academic

  • Trauma-aware, not trauma-centered

  • Grounded in real life, not just the text

Nightbloom was a strong start to the year because it naturally invited these kinds of conversations, without forcing them.

Closing Reflection

One of the key takeaways from this discussion is that stories can act as mirrors. They help us recognize parts of ourselves that we may not have had the language for before.

As we move forward with future selections, the goal remains the same:

to read with intention, to reflect honestly, and to build community through shared experience.

If you were not able to join us in January, we invite you to read along and join us for upcoming discussions. There is always space for you here.
